Human Research Ethics Board

Human Research Ethics Board

One of La Cité’s missions is to promote the advancement of knowledge, the integrity and the applied research excellence in accordance with the highest scientific and ethical standards. In order to do so, it promotes the responsible conduct of research. It ensures that human dignity is respected and human rights are protected during its research activities involving humans.

In this context, the REB’s role is to ensure that human dignity is respected and human participants are protected in research by conducting both an initial and ongoing ethical review of the research projects held under La Cité’s auspices and jurisdiction, whether the projects are conducted on campus or elsewhere and whether they involve La Cité’s students and staff or not. Members of the board are appointed by the College President for renewable terms of 1 to 3 years.

REB Secretariat

This role is held by Ms. Gloria Kinzanzala Mika, President’s Office Support . She carries out the following tasks, alongside the Board President:

  • General operations
  • REB plenary meetings
  • Delegated evaluations
  • Record retention and confidentiality
  • Information and training for the college community

Note that any research activity with human participants must be reviewed on ethical grounds and approved by the REB prior to its beginning. In general, no funding can be used for a research activity involving human participants without ethical approval of that activity by La Cité’s REB. However, in certain circumstances, exceptions can be made after consultation with the REB, for example when initial steps are required prior to the recruitment phase, in order to allow for the preparation of tools to be used during the research with human participants.

In order to submit an initial or ongoing request for an evaluation, or to find out more about ethics in research with human participants, please send an email at the following address: cer@lacitec.on.ca.
